 Amanda Nogic

Amanda was recently named a 2009 Presidential Management Fellow Finalist.  She is the only Hunter College graduate student and one of only two CUNY grad students accepted as a Finalist.

The Presidential Management Fellow program (PMF) is a program committed to attracting “to the Federal service outstanding men and women from a variety of academic disciplines and career paths who have a clear interest in, and commitment to, excellence in the leadership and management of public policies and programs.” The program recruits Master’s, J.D., and Ph.D. degree candidates who are near completion of their studies.

As part of the application process, she submitted a detailed resume, as well as a more in-depth explanation of her experience.  She was nominated by the chair of Hunter’s the Social Research department.  She also took an exam where she was tested in three areas (Life Experiences, Critical Thinking Skills, and Writing Fundamentals).

As a Finalist, Amanda is eligible to apply for placement into a federal agency if she meets the program requirements and performs successfully in her appointed position. This rigorous two-year paid fellowship includes formal classroom training of 160 hours, mandatory four to six month developmental assignment, optional rotations of one to six months in duration, challenging work assignments, potential for accelerated promotions, and opportunities to network with other future leaders.

As of today, Amanda has been offered a PMF at-large position with the National Institutes of Health, to work in several rotations over the duration of the two-year program, in areas like legislative affairs, budget and finance, outreach and communications, information technology, grants management, program and management analysis, contracts management, human resources, and general administration.

Amanda is currently enrolled in Hunter’s M.S. in Social Research program, with a concentration in Public Policy. She earned a B.A. in Sociology and English from Bucknell University in 2006. She also serves as the VP of Finance for the Hunter College Graduate Student Association. She will graduate in May 2009 and will be entering her appointed position with the National Institutes of Health in August 2009.

Carly Hauger

Carly was recently awarded a $2,000 grant from the Sydney Frank Foundation.  This is a grant awarded to high-achieving students in Hunter’s dual Master’s Degree program for Special Education and General Education.  She also received a $2,000 grant from the Laura Sylvia Meyers Foundation in 2005.

Carly is a Special Education & General Education major with a focus in Learning Disabilities. She tutored a student with severe learning disabilities in the Hunter College Learning Lab for a full school year.  This student has made incredible improvements in the areas of writing, reading, mathematics, organizational skills, communication, and socialization.

Additionally, she was able to complete the requirements of her program in record time—just under two years—while student teaching four days per week and working part-time on the weekends. Despite her busy schedule, she was able to make Hunter College’s Dean’s List three years in a row.  She will graduate from Hunter in May 2009 and hopes to secure a teaching position in a New York City school, where she can address the educational needs of a diverse population of students.

Carly earned a B.A. in Philosophy and a certificate in Women’s Studies from Florida Atlantic University in 2005. Her interests include cooking vegetarian meals from her share of a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), sewing and mending, creating and giving away art, biking, reading, and watching old films.

Congrats and good luck from all of us at Hunter GSA!
