The GSA Executive Council oversees the allocation of funds from three primary sources. These funds are made available to graduate students, organizations, and/or departments through an application process; each funding source has its own application process.
- Student Activity Fee funds ($11.15 per registered graduate student) are distributed to the GSA at the beginning of the academic year by the College Association (CA) and the Accounting Office. The GSA is the allocating body for these funds however, but these allocations are also overseen by the College Association Board. To determine allocations to graduate students and organizations, the GSA organizes a “Budget Process” each Fall and Spring semester. Unused SAF funds are rolled over as surplus for the following year.
- Graduate Investment Fund (GIF) is a “gift” from the administration to Hunter College graduate students, but is not a guaranteed source of funds. The VP of Administration will notify the GSA during the Fall semester whether there will be a GIF account available for that year. Previously, the annual GIF has amounted to approximately $17,000. The GSA Executive Council should not expect or rely on GIF, but should be prepared to make prompt recommendations for the use of the funds should they become available. It is usually taken from state tax-levy money, and its uses are therefore highly restricted. Thus, the application process for GIF grants will be determined by the GSA Executive Council each year, in consultation with the Hunter College Business Office and the President's Office.
- Auxiliary Enterprise Board (AEB) is the allocating body for AEB funds, which come from the proceeds from Hunter College's auxiliary services, including Dining Services, the Hunter College Bookstore, and Coin Copy machines. A portion of the AEB funds is redistributed to students in the form of AEB grants. Individual students, organizations, and departments - both undergraduate and graduate - can apply for funds each year by downloading the proposal and budget forms from the AEB website. Two GSA Executive Council members serve on the AEB Board, at least one of whom typically also sits on the Grant Review Committee. AEB awards grants to those proposals that will benefit the entire Hunter College community. Unused funds at the end of each academic year are used to help pay for Spring Commencement activities. There is usually little to no surplus left over for the following year.
